Every case is different. Some filings require only a copy of your green card; others may need relationship evidence, IRS reports, proof of child-support payments, court records, reference letters, and other items. What documents to file, and which to leave out, should be carefully considered, especially with changing policies on good moral character and neighborhood investigations. Driving tickets are “citations” and should be disclosed. Parking tickets generally are not reported. If you can’t remember all of your driving citations, request your record from your state’s DMV/RMV.

If you are a U.S. citizen when your child is born, then in many cases your child will automatically derive citizenship status at birth, even if they were born abroad. In other cases, if you naturalized before your child turns 18, and they were living in the United States as permanent residents in your custody, then they might automatically acquire U.S. citizenship. Consult with an attorney to evaluate your specific circumstances and to determine how best to establish and protect your child’s U.S. citizenship.

Most applicants will be tested on U.S. history, civics, and English. The officer will review your N-400 application with you and will repeat many of the questions on the form. Be prepared to discuss your attachment to the United States, tax compliance, trips outside the country, child support, employment history, arrests, criminal charges, and past visa applications. The United States allows dual citizenship with countries that recognize dual citizenship with the United States. If your other country does not recognize dual citizenship, then consider whether another lawful status is available before you apply for U.S. citizenship.
